This is a rom hack of Pokemon Ruby and while it is a 'rom hack' it is also a sequel to what happened in that game. You see in this game you play as the younger sibling of the character from Ruby. Pokémon Snakewood takes place a few years after Ruby and the region of Hoenn has really gone to hell thanks to a zombie outbreak. The basics of the story are that you are trying to save the region and put a stop to the madness and horror. The story is kind of awesome and even features the four horsemen of the apocalypse who you have to defeat!

The presentation of the game is great. It features many of your favorite Pokémon as well as some new ones created for this hack. What is cool about this is that they are zombie versions of Pokémon with new gross moves and a grotesque appearance too! I really like what they have done with the character designs here in Pokémon Snakewood and even the trainers are undead and want to kill you!

The Same, But Different
If you have played a Pokémon game before which I am sure you have or why would you be interested in this? Well, you will find what is on offer here from a gameplay point of view very familiar. The game does change a few things up here and there and some of these changes are quite drastic to the formula.One of the most notable things is the badge system. Once again, you need to get badges, but some of these are not just at the end of defeating a trainer at a gym. You get the badges by other means like finding one on a dead corpse or one at the end of a particular quest. It is an interesting take and one I did not expect. You will still fight other trainers and they are freaking hard. Actually, the whole game is brutally difficult and if you can get through it you really are a Pokémon master.
I enjoyed my time with Pokémon Snakewood. It is one of the most interesting concepts for a Pokémon rom hack and there were many moments that legit made me laugh. It is certainly not a game for younger Pokémon fans to be playing. The content is very mature-rated, but that is part of the charm as it is so unlike what we get with a regular Pokémon game. The hardest thing to get over for me is the brutal difficulty, I can see many folks getting frustrated with the game and not wanting to beat it.

- I liked the undead Pokémon
- Some of the new 'Fakemon' are cool
- The undead trainers you encounter are cool
- It is one of the most challenging Pokémon hacks I have played

- Some might not like the decaying look of the Pokémon!
- It might be unfairly hard in more than a few places
